Combuitar Modified

A couple of days ago I visited Mike Bennet-Levy at “Early Technology” Monkton House. He had the superb idea of lining the string guide channels of the mandolin section to allow for much smoother tuning! This has been a major break through for me as the burden of not knowing whether the ambient temperature / humidity would alter the tuning was a huge one to bear.

Mike carefully enlarged the string guide holes to a uniform size with his reamers then using his lathe he patiently carved out four very tiny bone tubes which he sized exactly to fit into the guide holes snugly.

The result is that the coil wound strings now glide through the tubes with minimal friction thus allowing the strings to be tensioned without snagging on wood.

I am a very happy man!
